Background
The Ethereum Classic (ETC) community stresses many of the same core principles as Bitcoin: censorship resistance, fixed monetary supply, and immutability, adding a Turing-complete smart contract platform. Ethereum Classic users and developersbelieve these characteristics allow them to be sure that transactions and decentralized applications (dApps) are truly censorship resistant and immune to any third party interference. ETC's structure varies significantly from most blockchain projects, incorporating multiple development teams--ETCDEV, IOHK, ETC Labs, and ETC Cooperative--each with their own goals. ETC teams typically focus on providing scaling solutions via side-chains, enabling trust-less machine-to-machine communication (aka IoT), building easy to use development tools (SDKs), and promoting cross-chain transactions so others can implement immutable smart contracts. ETC is one of the few cryptocurrencies where you are able to gain exposure to it through a traditional brokerage and or retirement account. Grayscale Investments has created an Ethereum Classic Investment Trust that is listed as a security under the ticker symbol ETCG. It allows investors to gain exposure to ETC without the worry of having to store or secure it. ETC is also eligible for tax-advantaged accounts by including it in a traditional IRA or Roth IRA.
Technology
ETC uses Ethash as its Proof of Work algorithm. New blocks are generated every 15 seconds, on average, and the current miner reward for each new block found is 4 ETC which is reduced by 20% every 5 million blocks (about 2.4 years). ETC will be mineable until around 2070 when miners will reach the soft supply cap of between 210 million and 230 million. In addition to miner rewards, ETC introduces Uncle Rewards, which incentive miners to include “uncle blocks”. Uncle blocks are valid blocks that arrived too late meaning another miner solved the proof of work faster than a given miner and claimed the miner reward, but that same block can be added as an “uncle block” by a slower miner. This practice decreases mining centralization and boosts network security. Every new block can contain at most two uncle blocks. Uncle block rewards are 3.125% of the miners reward, or 0.125 ETC. The ETC token fuels on-chain transactions, but a separate unit (called ‘gas’) measures the computational work of running transactions and smart contracts. The gas unit is necessary because of the volatile exchange rates of ETC and other cyrptocurrencies. Gas keeps cost of computation steadier and more organic in comparison. Gas means that the price of ETC can fluctuate but the price to perform services on the network won’t. The fee to make transact on ETC is (gas price) * (gas limit) and fees are paid to miners for including your transactions in a block. The gas limit is the maximum amount of gas you are willing to spend on a transaction, whereas the gas price is the cost you’re willing to pay for each gas unit. A normal transaction on the network costs 21,000 gas, but costs more if you are trying to execute something more complex as that requires more computational power. You can also speed up your TX by raising your gas price, since that will incentivize miners to include your TX in their block to receive those fees. The language most commonly used by ETC dapp developers is Solidity, but other languages (e.g. Vyper) are also used.
